John Klyza is an Australian screenwriter, multimedia artist and film archivist. He wrote the script for CABIN 28, produced by North Bank Entertainment and released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film, a pulse-pounding thriller, follows the Sharp family who are terrorized at an isolated cabin by mysterious assailants. It is based on one of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in American history.
He conducted scripting work on SILENT NIGHT BLOODY NIGHT 2: REVIVAL the sequel to the 1974 gothic Christmas horror progenitor, the darkly comedic CHEERLEADER CAMP 2 THE DEATH, a potboiler character study called INVITATION TO DIE and the viral curio DOLL KILLER. He has contributed story work to the upcoming LAST HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW, and is in active development on several projects to be announced.
In 2012, he founded New Wave Independent Pictures, a boutique film label dedicated to connecting niche movies to their ideal audiences in a crowded and rapidly changing marketplace. Under the trading name Retrosploitation Releasing, John licensed over 30 releases during a hyper-productive three year span. One of the titles was BLOOD DESERT, shot in 2004 by war-torn soldiers on the Kuwait/Iraq border. John handled almost every aspect of the releases, from designing cover sleeves to disc programming. It was also the only Australian company still manufacturing VHS releases alongside DVD.
John Klyza’s name is synonymous with the long-running SLEEPAWAY CAMP film franchise. As editor of the official website beginning in 1998, he was one of the primary heads behind the series’ resurgence. In 2002 he was invited to Los Angeles to assist with production of the SURVIVAL KIT DVD Boxset for Anchor Bay Entertainment. The set, popular for its creative “red cross” packaging was an immediate top seller. John later spent almost four years as a producer on SLEEPAWAY CAMP IV: THE SURVIVOR, supervising a painstaking reconstruction from Jim Markovic’s unfinished film footage. More recently, he produced the short WHATEVER HAPPENED TO MOLLY for MGM/Shout Factory’s blu-ray releases.
John authored a guest chapter in the mammoth tome EMPIRE OF THE BS: THE MAD MOVIE WORLD OF CHARLES BAND, which was released in 2014 and rated 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. His chapter, focusing on one of the most prolific and memorable video companies of the 80s, is soon to be expanded into the full-length book TOO GORY FOR THE SILVER SCREEN.
John is the son of artist/director John Klyza, Snr and lives in Canberra, where he enjoys the hubris of writing in third-person.
